Pandit Prattyush Banerjee
Prattyush Banerjee is one of the foremost sarode players in India today and is equally well known as a music composer, arranger and instrument designer. He is a leading disciple of the internationally celebrated maestro, Padmabhushan Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta and a worthy torchbearer of the Shahjahanpur-Bengal lineage. Besides featuring at classical music festivals, Banerjee has performed at the Bach Festival in Belgium and the MTV Coke Studio. His sarode pieces for films such as 'Piku' and 'Madras Cafe' have been acclaimed in all quarters. He has brought about several physical modifications in the traditional sarode and has created its first electric version, the Jyotidhwani.
LEARN MORE ABOUT FEES STRUCTUREBorn in Kolkata in 1969, Banerjee was initiated to the sarode at the tender age of eight by his father, Shri Prasun Kumar Banerjee, a well-known connoisseur and patron of music. Later he trained under Pandit Samarendra Sikdar, an eminent disciple of Sangeetacharya Radhika Mohan Maitra. Subsequently, he was under the coveted tutelage of Pandit Das Gupta for over thirty-five years. Banerjee has developed an individual musical style of his own that is recognisable at every stage of his performances. Amongst many new innovations and unique techniques, he was the first to play the complex tappa style of vocal music on the sarode.
Banerjee has been performing in public since he was 11, and has played at the Vishnu Digambar Jayanti Samaroh and ITC-SRA Music Conference, New Delhi; Tansen Sangeet Samaroh, Gwalior; Bhatkhande Sangeet Samaroh, Mumbai; Sursagar in Bangalore, Komal Nishaad in Baroda along with numerous concerts in Kolkata. Abroad, he has played at the Darbar Festival in London, The Tropentheater in Amsterdam and at venues across North America.
Banerjee has worked with renowned Indian composers - Salil Choudhury, V. Balsara, Ravindra Jain and filmmakers - Rituporno Ghosh, Aparna Sen and others. He has played fusion concerts with percussionists Pete Lockett, Bickram Ghosh, Tanmoy Bose and others. Besides his solo CDs and DVDs, he has collaborated with performers, Bratati Bandyopadhyay in Gitanjali, Joy Goswami in Jaijaiwanti and Jayati Chakrabarty in Raager Aloye Robi.
As a music producer, Banerjee has more than 75 albums to his credit. Singers he has worked with include Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, Alka Yagnik, Kaushiki Chakrabarty and others. He has conducted the Rabindrasangeet concerts featuring a thousand voices three times in a row. He has been honoured with the Ranadhir Roy Smriti Samman and the Outstanding Young Person of the Year Award in 2003, the Pabitra Dasgupta Memorial Award in 2007, the Sangeet Ratna Award in 2011 and the Batuk Nandi Smriti Purashkar in 2015. Several of his albums have received the GIMA and Radio Mirchi Awards. He has published a wealth of articles and journals on music and was also a research consultant at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata.
